Playlist for October 2016 (abridged)

This is a list of all the albums/EPs/demos/singles that I listened to in their entirety during the month of October 2016, along with stuff I read and watched. Notes regarding each follow. INTERVIEW: Ryan from Frustrated and Seance 9/20/16

This interview was conducted in between bands at Awakening Church 9/20/16. To inform what much of our conversation is about: During Frustrated's set I was in the moshpit and apparently ran into a girl behind me or something, and it all almost turned into a big scurfuffle. I was frankly surprised at what was going on because I didn't feel like I touched anybody at all but half the crowd was against me and others also didn't see the problem. We also talk about music and stuff too. Much like my interview with Lost Cause, there are other cast members to this interview and there was a lot of noise in the background so I apologize to anybody if I got their name or anything wrong. It spirals into heavy breakfast talk at the end.

IAN: This is Ian, who am I speaking with right now?
RYAN: This is Ryan from Frustrated and Seance
ROJELIO: Rojelio Barro, Road Dawg
I: Alright, so let's go over what just happened during the mosh pit right now, from your point of view
R: Just inconveniences, really. I don't really know. To me it doesn't really matter that much because shit's bound to happen but in all honesty, just people got pissed and shit escalated way too much. I feel like it's all misconstrued bullshit. Like, from what I understand - I didn't really see anything happen - but someone said that a girl got hit. I mean, girls know what they're getting themselves into by going to shows and shit. Like, it's not new. Girls just as much as guys or anybody who identifies as anything different knows, if you go to a show you're gonna get hit
I: I feel like somehow I was the guy swinging my arms I guess [but] I didn't mean to hit anyone. I didn't even realize I had hit anyone. So from that point of view, like, how do you make reconciliation?
[Female voice from background, later identified as TAYLOR]: Just, if you hit someone, and you feel that you've hit someone, then stop
I: I didn't feel that I did
T: Okay but lets say that you did, you just kinda look back and see who it is, kinda tap'em on the shoulder
I: Well thats normally what I would do, of course. I didn't even know that I had even tapped or run into anyone. So I don't know who it was [that I hit] but...what was your name just so I can properly identify you in this interview?
T: Taylor
R: Yeah, I mean, from my point of view - I didn't see what happened - but you were just moshing and shit and I really appreciate that coming from, like, the musician side of things
I: I was just trying to rock out
R: No, I'm totally all for that shit. That's what you're supposed to do. You're supposed to feel the music
I: So, I feel bad if in any way I would have disrupted anybody. I'm glad I was able to talk to you, I don't know who it was maybe I should [apologize] to
R: I mean, you and I both know it wasn't intentional. You just felt the music, which is what we're here for, you know? This shit is about getting out your aggression but you're also having fun with the music. Some people go and, like, target people at shows, which is bullshit. In those cases, whatever chip is on your shoulder, deal with it on your own time. But if you're just moving and having fun , I don't see why people would get pissed over that. You're just enjoying yourself. You didn't mean to hurt anybody
I: No, no, not at all. Well I'm glad you agree with me on that point. Thank you for talking with me. Do you have stuff coming up, like any records or anything
R: Yeah we're releasing a 2-song promo tape on October 11th with Hyperjoint [sic?] Records. It's gonna be 2 songs off our new 10-inch called "I've Lost Myself" which will be out next year. That's 7 new songs.
I: Word. What's your favorite breakfast food?
R: French toast. All the way
I: French toast?
R: I've been a breakfast head since day one. Anybody who says breakfast is just for the morning is a fucking liar. I'll eat breakfast at 6pm, I'll eat breakfast at 3 in the morning
[Male voice from the background, later identified (I think) as ROY: Anybody who says "girly" breakfasts are only for girls are idiots cuz I fucking love pancakes with strawberries
I: Wait, wait, what's your name?
ROY: Roy
I: [To Rojelio] And what's your favorite breakfast food
ROJELIO: Uhhhhhh...
ROY: Pussy
ROJELIO: I don't know
ROY: I always get strawberry banana pancakes
[Ruckus begins in the background as next band starts up]
R: You got any other questions for me?
I: Really I just wanted to clarify that I didn't assault anyone
R: No you didn't you were just having fun
I: Alright well as long as we're all good. Again, thank you for your time
R: Thanks for talking with us man
I: Do you guys have any plans on playing around town more or going on tour or anything
R: We were supposed to tour this year but a lot of us have work and shit and we're busy writing records so we're taking a break from touring for the rest of this year but next year....
[Background music becomes too loud to talk any further]

MOVIE/SHOW NOTES
- I watched the old noir "Turning Point" not the 70s ballet "Turning Point" that my mom loves
- Wow "Meet The Feebles" would be a really fucked up, disturbing movie even if it wasn't starring only warped Muppet-esque creatures...the song at the end, "Garden of Love"....an evil classic
- "Plan 9" wasn't nearly the piece of shit I thought it was gonna be, it wasn't great but I feel like I've seen movies from that era that were way stupider and poorly filmed that are seen as classics now
- Now "The Day Of The Animals" and especially "Frogs," those really do deserve their worst-of-all-time distinctions purely for being too boring even to laugh at

MUSIC NOTES
- New releases from Amon Amarth, Crab Legs, Zomby, Thy Art Is Murder, Chance The Rapper, Misery Ritual, Allegeon, Castaway, Rubicon, The 1975, Patti Smith & Co, Dogs, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
- The soundtrack for "Spawn" was so much better than the movie itself...the remix of "For Whom The Bell Tolls" is like the best track in Metallica's entire catalog, not to mention the stellar "No Remorse (I Want To Die)" collaboration between Slayer and Atari Teenage Riot or Orbital and Kirk Hammet's "Satan":...badass all around and has aged well with time surprisingly
- "Down on the Upside," much like its title, is a very internally confused and contradictory record, and not necessarily in a good way
- Favorite "new finds" of the month: Crab Legs, Mars Moles, Thy Art Is Murder, Allegeon, Castaway, Rubicon, Takemitsu
- Luscious Jackson is much like The Verve Pipe in that they really only have like 2 good songs but somehow milked a semi-successful 90s rock career for a couple years before being justifiably forgotten by everyone
- "Master of Reality" is by fat the best Christian Rock record ever made
- That 90s Prince album kinda sucked
- Prophets Of Rage doesnt live up to the sum of its parts but honestly what was to be expected
- Although my acoustic project is nothing like any of the artists they work with, Dead Ant Records put my cover of "I Remember" by Deadmau5 & Kaskade on their awesome compilation...Check it out at deadantrecords.bandcamp.com and check out their other artists as well its cool, diverse stuff
- "Be Here Now" would have been alot better if every damn song wasn't 6 minutes long

LIVE
9/3/16: Chromeo/Mimi Zulu @ Del Mar Fairgrounds
9/17/16: Castaway/Life Moves On @ Awakening Church
9/20/16: Safe & Sound/Born Guilty/Modern Love/Frustrated/Slow Decay @ Awakening Church
9/24/16: Black Sabbath/Disturbed/Megadeth @ San Manuel Amphitheater (Ozzfest)

LIVE NOTES
- Holy shit Chromeo fucking killed it, one of the best sets I've seen in awhile. That main singer dude can really wail on guitar, for real those dudes are underrated as musicians. Even if you're not too into their style of music, if you have a chance to see them live, take it. They are great. "Old 45's" is still like my #1 song right now.
- I missed the first 2 bands of that Awakening show unfortunately
- During Frustrated's set I apparently knocked into a girl and a bunch of people got in my face and a bunch of other people had my back but I interviewed the singer of the band who watched the whole thing and said the people getting pissed were the ones in the wrong so there's that...but it almost got gnarly up in that church
- I fucked up and missed almost all of Ozzfest but I bought my ticket for Black Sabbath and they did not disappoint. Just amazing, better than I was expecting it to be by a longshot. They might be old as fuck but they put on such a good show. For the first time I was one of the firepit people in the crowd and as toxic as those fumes are, it was quite the experience

INTERVIEW: Evan Pierce from The Coltranes, 9/20/16

This interview was during in-between shows at a recent show at Awakening Church in Murrieta, CA and is split into two parts, as you will see. This is like the third time I've interviewed Evan, my former roommate, but the first time I was able to transcribe it before my phone was destroyed. Enjoy.

IAN: This is Ian, I'm talking to Evan from The Coltranes, as well as other groups - The Ugly, etc...We were just kinda chit-chatting, we're outside a show, outside the Awakening Church; it's like, a hardcore show, and you kinda had something to say about how there might be a disconnect between what you guys have been presenting as "hardcore" and what I might be presenting as "punk" or "emo" or whatever [versus] what the scene at large might be doing. How would you like to elaborate on that?
EVAN: Uh, yeah, like I said earlier, I think that people have become really self-conscious and like, they've missed the whole point of hardcore and, like, punk in general which is just to be your fucking self. It just seems like, I don't know, everything makes them feel uncomfortable and [a lot of people] are just always on edge.
I: Like, what's the point of even doing this if you're not having fun?
E: Yeah, exactly. Maybe I'm just bitter but it seems like [some people] just come here as like, a fashion statement or something
I: I feel you. You've been around the country, you've toured around the country. I have not done that. Is California worse off than other parts of the country [regarding fashion]
E: Well, not blatantly, but in some ways, yeah. Alot of things are super fashion-sensitive and even fashion-driven really, which, I mean, I guess, in some aspects of punk the fashion can be part of the act, which is cool in some cases, but in most cases not really. But I don't know, in places like the Midwest, they just...I don't know, that's the only scene that I can think of where they just don't give a shit about anything and they're just there to have fun and it's really cool.
I: Well I can imagine that might be because they're a bit more isolated from the big media scenes; But [anyway,] we're here at a church [for the show tonight]. Me and you, well, I'm not gonna speak for you...
E: No, I'm full-blown atheist
I: Okay there ya go
[Laughter]
But like, this isn't a space we would normally inhabit or support; how do you feel performing in places like this? To me, I have a double view about it: I like that they open their doors to us
E: Yeah
I: But on the other end, I don't want to be in any way obligated to them or like, bring credence to what they espouse
E: Right
I: How do you feel [about the mater?]Because you've performed much more than I have.
E: Yeah, it's kind of a double-edged thing. I'm always iffy about it if I know a cut from the door is going directly towards the church. That's something I don't support in any way. You know, fuck that. But on the other hand, you know, it wasn't that uncommon like in the 80s to, like, rent out a church to play punk shows and that's cool, I guess.
I: Alright well it looks like [the next band] might be going on soon; I've interviewed you like, four times and this might be the only one that gets transcribed. You know what's coming next: What's your favorite breakfast food?
E: Fucking eggs florentine
I: Eggs florentine.Okay you gotta describe that fully
E: Okay so you know what eggs benedict is?
I: Yes of course
E: Okay, so eggs florentine is just a spin on it where it's just an english muffin topped with spinach and a poached egg and then hollandaise sauce. It doesn't have, like, canadian bacon on it.\
I: What is in hollandaise sauce? It's like the yolk and then something else mixed with it or something?
E: I actually don't know. That's actually something I've never known. I just eat it.
I: Okay well we'll figure this out on the next episode
[Laughter]
Well thanks for talking with me, we'll be talking again soon
E: Of course

PART II

I: Alright Evan, we're doing an extension of the interview [from earlier]. We just talked about general stuff, music, etc. but [on a more serious note], you had a stroke recently
E: A seizure
I: A seizure, I'm sorry. That was a couple weeks ago
E: Yeah, three weeks ago
I: I worry about you, man, I really do. Explain the circumstances of what happened
E: Well, essentially I, like, pumped a lot of narcotics into my body for a week straight and then on top of that I drank alot of alcohol and, um, also I'm very emotionally stressed out. I was having a little crisis and I had a seizure while I was working at my job
I: Which job was this
E: I was a fry cook
I: Okay
E: The seizure...luckily, my fucking manager, like, grabbed my head cuz I would have hit my head. She had seen me and my eyes started to roll in the back of my head while I was still standing up and she...I basically fell over and she caught my head before I landed straight onto the fucking corner. Which I am thankful for, I guess, but...yeah
I: I'm thankful too. Okay so because of that you had lost your driver's license for awhile but now it's back?
E: Yeah. I don't know what's up with the hospitals around here but this is the second time I've had my license revoked cuz of a seizure, but it, like, wasn't really revoked. The DMV never got notified and they never sent me any paperwork.
I: So they just told you it was revoked
E: Yeah they basically just lied I guess cuz I called the DMV and they checked and my license is still valid. But I mean I'm not gonna have any seizures any time soon. I'm 15 days sober, and that's what was causing my seizures I guess...withdrawal
I: Well, you're gonna head out from here, I'm gonna stay for the rest of the show but I'm gonna extend my normal ending question since you already answered it: What's your favorite song, right now, right this second, favorite song?
E: "When I Get The Time" by the Descendents
I: "I Get The Time?"
E: Yeah, you know, [singing]"when I get the time to sit down a write a song for you"
I: See I would go with [singing] "I saw the sign, I opened up my eyes I saw the sign"...you know, Ace Of Base?
[Laughter]
Alright Evan I love you man
E: You too
I: I'll post this once I have both parts typed up; who do you think I should interview next? Have you noticed anyone interesting?
E: Yeah, I liked that band who was playing when everybody tried to fight you. They were good, [but] I don't know who they were
I: You're right, everybody tried to fight me
[Laughter]
Nobody fought me at all
E: Nobody wins, we all lose. Dead for nothing
I; This is gonna be a good interview. Enjoy the soul, live together.

UPDATES:
- Googles definition of hollandaise sauce: An emulsion of egg yolk and liquid butter, usually seasoned with lemon juice, salt, and a little white pepper or cayenne pepper.
- The band who was playing when everyone tried to fight me was Frustrated and I have an interview with them regarding all that and more coming soon.

INTERVIEW: Benjamin from Castaway, 9/17/16

I talked to Ben from Castaway a few days ago and followed up with an email question which I never have done before. Baby steps.

IAN: This is Ian, I'm here talking with the guitarist of Castaway; what was your name again, man?
BENJAMIN: Benjamin.
I: Benjamin. Alright, well you guys just finished up here at Awakening out here in Murrieta; You're from San Jose, that's a long way from home
B: Yes sir
I: How long have you guys been touring around on this stretch?
B: Almost 2 weeks, I think this is the twelfth day
I: Have you guys been down this way before?
B: Yeah totally. We played at a house in...I don't know, I forgot the name of the city but it started with a P.
I: Pomona maybe?
B: Yeah, Pomona
I: That would make sense. So how long have you guys actually been playing? Because you're very together [sonically]
B: As a band or as individuals?
I: Well I guess as a band, but...
B: About 3 years
I: Have you guys been involved in other projects before that?
B: Oh yeah totally. I'm 19 now, so [I've been playing] since 13, so 7 years straight
I: Damn, that's what's up
B: Thanks
I: I'm 28 and still haven't even toured so keep on going on. So, the song I was mentioning to you that I really identified with is "Long Lost;" is that from the most recent album or is there anything that's come out since then?
B: Yeah, the last thing we released was an LP called "No Comfort" and it was on that.
I: I really liked the theme of that, like you can't take certain things back, you know?
B: Totally, totally

[email follow-up question:]
I: During our initial convo you had said the rest of the band doesn't really like playing [that song] so my question is why is that? Is is the music itself or the lyrical content? Why do you think you're the main supporter of keeping that song in the set?
B: Shoot I should've kept my mouth shut about that haha. However, "Long Lost" is the oldest song in our set so we have been playing it the longest. And as true as that may be, I still think it can be enjoyable for new and even old listeners. Doesn't matter if the performers are tired of playing it. It's about what the fans want to hear. Until a new song of ours outshines "Long Lost" is when I think we should stop playing it

I: So the scene in San Jose and the Bay Area in general is kind of - I've been there a couple times - it seems like the melodic hardcore stuff is alot more prevalent there than it is here in Southern Caifornia
B: Yeah it's a pretty new genre
I: It seems like here in this area it's still more of the aggro stuff. I mean, when you've come down here have you ever felt, like, out of place at shows or anything?
B: Oh totally, yeah. We're on tour with a band called Spirit now and they're like a post-hardcore band and we've played nothing but post-hardcore shows all tour so we've been sticking out at every show really. We were kinda worried about it at first.
I: I would think that crowd would appreciate you guys more than like the beatdown crowd
B: Either way, I think it's right in-between really. It just depends on whether [people] like it or not.
I: Word. Well, the show's over and I missed half the bands unfortunately
B: You fucked up man
I: Was Spirit not here tonight?
B: Yeah, yesterday was their last show with us and they just had to go home today cuz one of their bassists got pretty sick
I: Oh that sucks. Well where are you guys going from here?
B: We're going to Fresno tomorrow and that's the last day
I: Finally home
B: Yeah, yeah...It's kinda sad, kinda happy to be home so I can see my dog and stuff
I: Do you guys have plans from here for like another release or another tour; what's your itinerary?
B: We just got gone writing and recording a new EP. We haven't named it anything or released it
I: But it's already recorded and everything?
B: Yeah it's already recorded. We're waiting for the mixes and the masters back
I: Hell yeah
B: We don't know when they'll get back to us
I: Well I'm gonna kinda end things out here; something I like to ask people although it's not related to anything: What's your favorite breakfast food?
B: That's a good question. I like to get, at Denny's - we go to Denny's alot cuz it's cheap - I like to get chicken-fried steak and eggs
I: Oh yeah, like with the gravy
B: Oh yeah dude that's the best part
I: What I do is I get the hash browns and then you the mix the gravy [with them]
B: Yes. Over-easy eggs, cholula, dive in
I: There ya go. Well, thank you much for your time Benjamin and good luck on your travels!
B: Thank you for coming out

Faith No More: My DIY Spirituality

I will preface this writing by letting you, the reader, know that I endorse no religion or faith beyond what my own mind has conjured. Along with that sentiment I want to also make it clear that I mean no offense to any other forms of belief if they help you and don't hurt others.
I also understand that the ideas I'm expressing are in no way new. Sometimes it just makes me feel better to put things in word form.Everyone sees things differently, and this is how I see them.

All animals, plants, minerals, bacteria, etc. have all come from the same source, and its nothing mystical. It's all from our Mother Earth. We are terrestrial beings and our planet has given us everything we will ever need, and when we pass away we will return to Her soil and regenerate a new era. We will always be, although this momentary existence gives us anxious doubt. We're so worried about death, but in reality, our corpses will be productive fertilizer for those yet to come.
   We are all always reincarnated.

The Melting Corpse is the Sea Of Light, The Ancient Tide.

But our planet doesn't care about us. It's a rock in space, just like you are an animal in the wilderness. Mother Earth can't control everything you do, She can't even inform you of what you might be doing wrong because you're supposed to figure that out yourself.
She birthed you and She will kill you eventually. It's not up to Her to give you direction all the time. We're already rotating at a consistent pace around the Sun; you'll figure out the rest for yourself or you won't.

That said, the seemingly-bleak lack-of-meaning is what ultimately gives you, a Human Animal, so many possibilities. You can do whatever you want as long as you're not hurting others. Shit, the criminal class figured out long ago that no one's watching you.
Besides police. The Police are real and I'm really afraid of them. They're really good at what they do.
Jail is real. Lucifer is a character. I'm not scared of characters.I'm scared of Police.

   I'm scared of car crashes.

There is no hell; hell is an elaborately effective literary device that has trapped us for millennia. But that trapping, in itself, reflects the very nature of our experience. Our art, our literature, our thoughts...these are the best parts of our animal existence. These feelings and expressions and meanings that we make for ourselves, they are the best parts of our short lives. Mother Earth can't take those things away because we pass ourselves to the next generation.

Rock n roll can never die.

I understand that it's hard for certain individuals, certain personality types etc., to feel confident in themselves when they cognize the idea of being an animal in a godless world full of self-indulged mythology and lies, but to me it's empowering. Once you set aside all the guilt and shame of sin and judgement what you're left with is freedom limited only by physics and morality.
Morality itself is a mechanism of the mind and therefore somewhat malleable. Rights do not exist but they are a nice thing to keep in mind so as to make our existence in society workable. But our philosophical ramblings and 'conclusions' are in essence only thoughts that we somehow make real through our actions, or negate and make useless, through our actions.
It's all always in our hands.

So lay down the fear and the anxiety that belief in a higher power entails and find meaning in the life that's in front of you. Mother Earth will always be there, but she's not there for you. You make your own fate.

   Faith No More.

A Walk To The Store

Pt. 1
I stood there, not knowing what I was so afraid of.

Pt. 2
The Difference Between Balconies and Ledges is the railing security. On a ledge, a strong zephyr could push a stationary object into the implied abyss without much resistance, but on a balcony the railing will hold it there. For something to fall off a balcony it would be either a result of carelessness or deliberance. Either something got knocked off the sill by, lets generously say, a sauntering cat, ot else it had purposely been thrown.
   Perhaps it threw itself.
But intent is an element on a balcony. With a ledge its all nature. Nothing is stopping the wind from pushing things off the edge.

Pt. 3
Jessica was outside smoking a cigarette and peering over the rail, looking deeply at who knows what. Beside her leaning arm was her mug of coffee, sweetened beyond my own tastes. I told her I'd be leaving and asked if she needed anything. Without changing pose she replied in the negative. I could see she had her thoughts.

Pt. 4
From my apartment to the store there is a sidewalk trail separating the housing complex from an adjacent park where children practice sports. The first thing you come across when you pass the threshold from private to public domain is a small gated dog park where bored adults sit and sigh to the ether as their animals for once let loose.
Normally, passing this area is a small joy, what with the unstoppable spirit prancing by the gate. But that day I was confronted by a large German shepherd who had ran out of the unlocked fence and sprinted around the side landscaping to growl at me.
Having spent my life around beasts of all kinds, I'm accustomed to unprovoked aggression, but it still causes alarm. I stepped back and cooed "puppy..." as though it were my own, but as soon as the word left my mouth I heard a second growl from behind my back.
The first dog's companion had produced hinself behind me and had me cornered at the edge of the chain-link fence. Despite my love of animals and nature, I also know that those things can be unpredictable. They can be dangerous.
I put my back to the fence and lightly muttered "no..." when the canine's owner ran out from the park and yelled "get back here!!!" towards his pets and almost concurrently "don't worry, they're nice" towards me. I accepted his platitude and he furthered, "they're never like this. I don't know what set them off."
The dogs ran back to their owner and I continued walking down the trail, shaken but still...
A voice came down spitefully from an unseeable balcony above the exterior fence, from my own apartment complex but from a section I am unfamiliar with, from some disembodied person who apparently witnessed my apprehension as they enjoyed their coffee and cigarettes.
He said, "I would have attacked you too."
I was flabbergasted at such an expression of impossible hostility, but then I realized I wss wearing Chargers blue, and even though I'm in Southern California, this will always be Raiders Nation for some reason.
   Fucking animals.

Pt. 5
The end of the trail has multiple pairs of tied-together shoes hanging from the phone posts above. I've always wondered who does this because I walk down this trail all the time and not once have I seen an altercation or instance of bullying. But the amount of shoes on the line indicates that at some point in the recent past, some kind of low-level predator predated.
The thought of walking back without ample footing is a dismal one indeed.
I passed through the Town Center, past the gym and the beauty salon and the retail box where people spend entirely too much time purchasing things they barely want and do not need.
The sheer amount of products in that store is a reflection of how much is returned. As long as you keep your receipt you can continue that process of hyper-consumption ad infinitum without truly seeing a cost. You just return.
My path through the drug store is always very deliberate. The seventh aisle holds what I want. I pick it up and head to the register, awkwardly waiting behind others doing the same. All waiting for the same interaction and outcome.
   Sometimes it feels like forever.
The ladies at the counter are familiar with me because I frequent this location fairly often, and despite my tendency towards vice that's clearly indicated by my usual purchases, they all display a certain level of relief upon a somewhat known visage.
Perhaps it is because I return.
Predictability can dull most anything, and comfort comes from the known.
During my exchange at the counter, three adolescents in baggy clothes walked in and immediately walked to the candy area, which happened to be directly next to the cashier station we were at. They grabbed some sweets and left our vicinity towards the beverage area.
With accusatory eyes peering - following them - the cashier said to me, "I always forget when kids start wearing jackets in here; I'm in the air conditioning all day so I don't feel the seasons change."
There was an implied air of aloof humor in her statement, but what she was actually saying was "I thought those hoodlum youths were going to attack and rob us both."
It was an odd thing to hear from this lady. Those kids looked like my little brother's friends.
I wonder what she really think about me.

Pt.6
On the way home I again pass by the storefronts underneath a concrete awning still bearing the faded imprinted insignias of former occupants. I glance at my reflection from the passing windows here and there to make sure I'm still who I think I am, and then then turn away quickly so as to deny my vanity from being seen by anyone else.
Thank goodness this place is empty.
On the way back to the dog-park trail, shoes still hanging overhead in the brewing evening darkness, a sewer system beneath the back alley rushes. In drier seasons, local ne'erdowells traverse the tunnels, now heavily graffitied and fondly nicknamed "Hell."
I went down there one time on Halloween. The walk from beginning to end, eventually pouring out near a medical complex, was just fine. It was the walk back, however, when I felt the needed fear sweep over me.
We realized about halfway through that we had taken the wrong tunnel and we didn't know where we were going, where we would end up, or how long it would take to get back. I had stepped in a puddle and every step I took squished with uncertainty.
We were surrounded by nothing, nothing but our own worry.
"What if I never get back?"
The trail from the store, conversely, is always somehow nicer on the way home, especially during this time of day when the sunset implies night but colors the remaining moments of light as though it were mournful for their loss. I started feeling content with the evening, looking to the sky and accepting that the day was done.
As I reached the top of the hill, near the opening to the dog park where the shepherds had earlier surrounded me, an elderly woman passed through the entrance from the apartment parking lot. She looked up at me as I approached and had a look of utter terror in her eyes when she perceived me. She stood concrete where she stood and clutched her handbag to her chest.
She thought I was going to do something bad. It made me feel odd so I just bowed my head and said "good evening" without making eye contact as I walkes past her, leaving ample room between our persons.
When I looked behind me upon reaching the parking lot she was carefully walking down the sidewalk, looking dead forward and continuing to clutch her things close to herself.
I wonder what she's had to deal with.

Pt. 7
I put my bags in my room and walked out to the balcony, leaning on the ledge and looking nowhere.
I stood there, not knowing what I was so afraid of.

INTERVIEW: Lance from Variants, April 30th 2016 at The Dial

Variants is a pop-punk/emo band from New Orleans who played at The Dial's final show in Temecula, CA on April 30th and after their set I had a short conversation with the vocalist Lance. Check it out.

IAN: Alright this is Ian, I'm here with Lance from Variants...I just watched you guys here at The Dial; this is the last show we're ever gonna do here. You guys are from New Orleans?
LANCE: Yes sir
I: That's a long way from home
L: Yes, it is
I: Do you normally play places like this?
L: We usually try to stay local but we booked this last thing a few months ago and we really wanted to branch out, see new places and everything
I: I see you've got this album called "Commonwealth;" is the first thing you've released on this level?
L: No, we have a full-length out called "The Concept of Color." We released that about 2 years ago, about that, but this is the first thing in our new direction.
I: Sure. Now, I don't know if this will come as an insult or as a compliment; you guys sound to me, especially your voice: {early] Fall Out Boy.
L: I have heard that a lot.
I: How do you feel about that?
L: I love Fall Out Boy. "Take This To Your Grave" is probably one of my top 5 albums ever.
I: Now I'm just gonna be blunt: you are a great singer, but communicating, I can see you have a bit of a stutter
L: Yes I do
I: Do you know if that's a genetic thing or a nervous thing or...
L: I have had a stutter since I was 2 [years old], but singing is on the left side of the brain and speaking is on the right, so that something to do with it, I guess
I: Well either way you're a great singer
L: Thank you so much man
I: So where are you guys going from here?
L: Tomorrow we are playing the Chain Reaction actually
I: How long have you been on the road so far?
L: This is day 8 of about 30 days
I: God Damn
L: Yeah it should be pretty fun
I: So do you guys have anything coming to follow this album?
L: Yes, we are going into the studio around late June-ish, around there. Hopefully we'll have something new out by the turn of the new year.
I: Hey, there you go. Well again, you had a great set tonight, I really enjoyed your shit and I wish you well on the tour
L: Hell yeah, thanks dude
I: The last thing I always ask people when I'm talking to them: What's your favorite breakfast food?
L: Breakfast food? Oh dude, oh fuck...honestly man I'd say french toast. I'm a huge french toast guy.
I: There you go. That's a perfect answer. Well thank you again, Lance
L: Absolutely
I: I hope everything goes well on the rest of your trip

ALBUM REVIEW: Thrice - "To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere"

I didn't even know Thrice had even been on hiatus. I kinda stopped paying attention after "The Alchemy Index" EPs, honestly, but I always held them as a band in fairly high regard. I love their early stuff and "The Artist in the Ambulance" was on nearly constant repeat for awhile in my high school girlfriend's room. I found their transformation from emo-punk to hard alt-rock to be somewhat disappointing and boring, but I could see what they were going for. It was still quality output, if a bit slow and pretentious for my tastes.
Apparently they took a break after their 2012 album "Majors/Minors," which I never listened to so I can't comment on how far removed that last effort is from this new one. I can say, however, that this new album "To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere" is a million miles away even from the toned-down Thrice I had already written off a decade ago.
First of all, vocalist Dustin Kensrue doesn't sound like old self whatsoever. He still sounds strained and gruff but it just somehow doesn't sound like the same singer to me. I noticed it right away and it's weird. I can't illustrate this aspect of the album more clearly, or make a bigger insult regarding his vocals, than what my roommate asked me as I was making my breakfast whilst blasting the album through our living room TV:
"Are you listening to fucking Daughtry?"
Dusty, I'm sure that hurts, and you deserve the pain.
Much like bands younger than them, such as A Day To Remember and Bring Me The Horizon, Thrice's new material is almost completely stripped of their roots in punk/hardcore/emo/etc. and seems to be entirely catered to the festival market in its insipid accessibility. Its like if Kings Of Leon made an attempt at a post-hardcore-esque album. The song "Stay With Me," in particular, sounds like it was pre-planned for an uplifting reality-show montage, it's so cheesy. I expect this kind of shit out of the All-American Rejects or All Time Low, not you, Thrice.
The end of the album has some slight reminders of the style most Thrice fans are akin to, particularly the song "Whistleblower," but its a case of being too little too late, too far into the mess. If my roommate thinks you sound like Daughtry, he's not gonna get far enough into the album to hear the 2 songs that kinda sound like old Thrice. It's a statement to my music-OCD that I made it that far myself.
The last song is a mixed bag; it displays the more-mainstream affectation that Kensrue has put on his voice to its worst dimension, sounding somewhere in-between the singers of The Flaming Lips and Deer Tick but without either of their irony. It is, however, the most tranquil and subtle song on the album; for some reason it reminded me of a more-electrified version of "Farewell and Goodnight" by The Smashing Pumpkins. That's far and away the best thing I can say about this album, and that's really not even a standout Pumpkins song.
I'm sure this album will get its fair share of coverage because of the aforementioned hiatus, but in my ears this 'comeback' album doesn't even sound like the band I used to love at all. Instead it's something that I normally would have avoided if not for the name of the band.
   Unfortunately, strongly not recommended.

MUSIC NOTES
- That Century Media CD has a bunch of dope songs on it I'm glad I re-found it; on a related note, that "Generations" mix has a Fucked Up song at the end that I love so much I've been re-listening to almost every day...Fucked Up is just an amazing band
- Favorite "new finds" of the month: Coerced, Flatbush Zombies, The Wildhearts, Big Grams, Forest Whitaker, World's Fair, Luna, Chron Gen, Plattenbau, Inocentes
- "Somehow, I never leave this Dead House"
- New releases by Coerced, Walls Of Jericho, Big Grams, Atreyu, Moby, Culture Abuse, Bob Dylan, Waxahatchee, Code Orange, and Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge are all on point
- "I get this funny feeling that you don't love me anymore..."
- I've been recommended Flatbush Zombies for several years now and I regret sleeping on them, they rule
- "Can't Hardly Wait"
- If a band released an album like "Love Gun" today they'd be ostracized for the sheer level of misogyny...or they'd be Steel Panther
- "What We Want Is Free"
- Thin Lizzy's song "Sarah" is like the greatest thing ever
- Some of the lyrics on Culture Abuse's new album really hit home for me, very good stuff
- "Let's Face It" is one of the most listened-to CDs in my entire gigantic collection despite it being so drastically more upbeat than most of my other favorites...maybe that's why I turn to it so often, come to think of it
- Meat Grinder was so underrated even in the-then much-smaller Temecula scene they were from in the late 90s but goddamn those dudes could wail
- If anybody wants that Confide CD you can have it but be warned, I'm gonna judge you
- I know that Chino Moreno regrets "Back To School" but goddamn that song is badass
- Who would have guessed that Ryan Adams covering a very recent Taylor Swift album in full would be such a good listen
- It's a real shame about the dissolution of Crisis Arm because their final album "Rend" has only gotten better with time
- "We may not be The Young Ones very long"
- I can't believe I had never even heard of Luna, Chron Gen, or Inocentes before now ...Inocentes especially is fucking awesome, like if The Adicts spoke Spanish
- The new Thrice album is so disappointing that I wrote a fairly lengthy review of how bad I thought it was...look for that soon

MUSIC NOTES
- Why does every hardcore band have ridiculous FX on the vocals nowadays? And why for the DK's would they make such a shitty covers compilation? For shame...
- New releases by Tidemouth, Abuse Of Power, Born Of Osiris, Harms Way, Janet Jackson, Die Antwoord, Mallory Knox, Tenement, Xiu Xiu
- Favorite "new finds" of the month: Abuse Of Power, Jawbox, Goblin, Mallory Knox, Lower Than Atlantis
- The dude's voice kinda gets on my nerves but man, The Thermals have excellent lyrics; I think I underestimated them in that aspect when I first heard them
- Rebel, Rebel
- "I guess good love ain't good enough"
- God I fucking hate Styx
- Man that Hall & Oates album fucking kicks ass I had no idea
- Sorry kids but Turnstile wasn't nearly as dope as you guys make them out to be
- The devil sends me here to you, and if you fear, you have reason to

MOVIES

              "Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive"
4/14/16: "Chris Rock: Bigger and Blacker"
4/21/16: FINISHED "Master of None" Season 1

MOVIE NOTES
- I hate to be so blatantly corny, but "Children Of The Corn" is probably the corniest "horror" movie I've ever seen
- "Can't Buy Me Love" has such a fucked-up premise and so many fucked-up plot points along the way that all I can think of doing with it is making a gritty reboot
- The new Star Wars movie was even better than I expected; my only lament is that there's not more screen time for R2
- Someday I'm gonna do a stand-up special of my own
- "Master Of None" is a really good show

LIVE
4/2/16: Happy In Hemet/Tomber Lever/The Dickheads/[The Gravitys] @ Anthony's house
4/22/16: Frustrated/Failure Pact/Relevant Anger/Proletariat Youth @ The Dial
4/23/16: Royce Rubio/Gatsby's Fiddle/Liquid/Zoccola/Magpie @ Casa de Teme-culo
4/30/16: [end of the summer]/My Iron Lung/Variants/Keyes/Mouthful Of Snow @ The Dial

LIVE NOTES
- It sucks that Bean and by extension Happy In Hemet are gone now but that show at Anthony's house was fucking killer...It was so dope that I passed out at like 11pm and when I woke up the ceiling lights in the living room had been pulled down and there were like 500 beercans to clean up...Glorious
- Wow, Frustrated was fucking AWESOME; I had seen them before and it was alright but this time was straight-up bonkers
- As much as I find it hard to believe and very depressing that after all these years The Dial has been brought down by the actions of its own maker and not because of some random act of drunkenness or violence or something, the times I spent with the community there have been invaluable to me and I'll never forget the greatness we once harnessed. It was important to me that I closed out that final show because it really is the end of an era for me as well as for many others, so thank you to those of you who watched. Rock n roll will never die.
